Must-Watch Movies and Shows for September

by Valentina Salinas 10th A

All of these movies and TV series are highly recommended to watch as a perfect plan to do on any September day, Love and Friendship month. As part of a homework break, you can ask your dad to make some popcorn, and with the company of your family, friends or significant other, you can relax, and learn the importance of some values such as friendship, love for others, and self-love.

Movies

  1.  Sierra Burgess is a Loser: A case of mistaken identity leads to an unexpected romance when a teen joins forces with a popular student to win the heart of her high school crush.

  1. Safe Haven: Katie Feldman moves to a small town on the North Carolina coast, determined to make a new life for herself. She takes a job as a waitress and keeps a low profile, but she is soon won over by the warmth and caring of the close-knit community, especially that of widower Alex. With the help of Alex and his children, Katie learns to love and trust again, but when a mysterious stranger arrives and starts asking questions, Katie's dark past threatens to reclaim her.

  1. Dear John: Like an angry rebel, John dropped out of school and enlisted in the Army, not knowing what else to do with his life. However, everything changed when he met the girl of his dreams, Savannah. Their mutual attraction quickly grows into the kind of love that leaves Savannah waiting for John to finish his tour of duty, and John wanting to settle down with the woman who has captured his heart. But 9/11 changes everything. John feels it is his duty to re-enlist. And sadly, the long separation finds Savannah falling in love with someone else. “Dear John,” read the letter …and with those two words, a heart was broken and two lives were changed forever. Returning home, John must come to grips with the fact that Savannah, now married, is still his true love, and face the hardest decision of his life.

  1. 10 Things I Hate About You: The Stratford sisters are very different.  The beautiful and popular Bianca has never dated a boy, and Kat, her older sister, is a witch with a very bad temper, who is determined to reject any boy who shows the slightest interest in her.  Unfortunately, the strict regulations governing the Stratford home prohibit Blanca from having a boyfriend until her unbearable sister has one; a situation that seems more than unlikely considering that Kat leads a disastrous social life.  Finally, a boy arrives, rebellious but very handsome. Will she finally open up to the possibility of being in a relationship?

  1. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas: Although this story shows a very sad reality, and it can make you cry if you have a sensitive heart, it shows a great story of friendship. Two children, who against all odds, naturally become friends in the worst of circumstances.  The Holocaust, World War II, and concentration camps are depicted like never before, this time, from the viewpoint of childhood.

TV Shows

  1. Friends: I think we all know why Friends couldn't stay out of this list (I mean who doesn’t love the series intro song, and who wouldn’t love having a friendship as funny and perfect as the one these 6 characters share). Rachel Green, Ross Geller, Monica Geller, Joey Tribbiani, Chandler Bing and Phoebe Buffay are six 20 something year-olds, living off one another in the heart of New York City. Over the course of ten years, this average group of buddies goes through massive mayhem, family trouble, past and future romances, fights, laughs, tears and surprises as they learn what it really means to be a friend.

  1. Gilmore Girls: This show in particular shows a different kind of friendship, the friendship between a mother and a daughter that develops while they go through the obstacles of life. Lorelai Gilmore becomes pregnant when she is only 16  and decides to not marry her daughter's father. Instead, she moves to the town of Stars Hollow (New England) to escape from her disappointed parents and raise her daughter Rory alone. When the series begins, Lorelai has already managed to become indispensable in the little hotel where she started working as a cleaner for a long time ago.  Rory has turned 16 and has just been accepted to Chilton, a prestigious preparatory school that could make her dream of studying at Harvard University a possibility. Lorelai, unable to pay the costs of this school, comes to a deal with her distant parents: they lend her the necessary money if and only if she and her daughter share a dinner with them every Friday. The tension between Lorelai and her parents and the new and closer bond that Rory comes to develop with her grandparents are presented as some of the main themes of the series.  Lorelai's and her ´parent’s approach to what raising a kid is are completely contradictory. On one hand, Lorelai is most concerned with her daughter's happiness, so her way of parenting leads to an infinite number of fun situations. However, Rory’s grandparents are much more controlling and protective, especially because they do not want Rory to repeat the same mistake her mother made when she was little.  Rory’s path to adulthood comes packed with family troubles, first loves and desires to grow. ‘Gilmore Girls’ is a show full of laughter, original comedy and a sense of warm- a definite must-watch!
